well, hello.

It’s been a while. I am slacking on the construction updates that I promised this girl I would post. (She can’t read well so I told her I’d put up pictures).

It was going to be a change over time view of the J-school. But, obviously, that has not been done. So to update you— the building is looking fabulous! No more watching the construction workers as they sit around and look worthlessly at a half-constructed building. I’ll just leave you all in anticipation.

In other news, you may have missed this story on the warren funeral chapel, which was not getting rid of bodies properly. Slightly disturbing.

Other local news you may have missed:

1. Outside magazine voted Columbia, MO one of the top 10 places to live in the country. (#1 is DC). Really.

2. Columbia’s water did not pass safe water testing levels, and I starting using my Brita.

3. Columbia schools did not pass MAP (testing) standards, which is part of the No Child Left Behind Act.

4. A man fell off an I-70 overpass after being tasered by a police officer. The man was apparently on the overpass to commit suicide; he had been deciding whether or not to jump before he was shocked. This report states that some watchers “urged him to jump” prior to the taser incident.

5. There is a national rock, paper, scissors contest? …

6. People in Mid-Mo really care about the Anheuser-Busch buy-out.

7. Como’s first murder of the year went down this summer. I could not find the article I originally read about this, but I remember that he was about 22 and was shot inside his home.

8. Moe’s Southwest Grill in downtown Como closed, probably because the food was terrible.

9. This was news to me- Columbia has a lake that you can swim in. Stephen’s Lake Park is like a mini Lake of the Ozarks! I went there to lay out, play in the water and swim laps today. It was lovely. There’s even some sand!

10. Lists of 10 always look more complete.

Quickie

  • The Dark Knight = Mind Blowing. You’ll have to wait until my good friend Carl gets a chance to see it overseas to get the full fledged movie blog that I’m sure he will write, but I wanted to give my two cents. Best movie I’ve seen in a long time. Go see it… 3 or 4 times
  • Our house is infested with fruit flies. There’s a war going on and the chemicals that I am using as my weapons are making me sick.
  • RIP CB. I hope you found your peace.
  • San Francisco was incredible. JanSport is awesome (see pictures below). More developments of this to come in the near future. But if you want to get ahead of the game, I’d go ahead and become a fan of JanSport’s facebook page because I will be forcing you to in the next few weeks.
  • Happy 21st Birthday Julia Harmon. May God have mercy on our souls. (No one picked me up from Heathrow so I just took the next available flight back to STL. Sorry I missed the celebrations.)
  • Oh and where the hell did the Summer go?

I’m just, tryin to stay above water y’know
Just
stay busy, stay workin
Puff told me like, the key to this joint…
The key to staying on top of things
is treat everything like it’s your first project, know what I’m sayin’?
Like it’s your first day like back when you was an intern
Like, that’s how you try to treat things like, just stay hungry

Are You Alive?

Although I had an extremely successful trip this past three-day weekend back home to Indiana and then to Ohio, I haven’t stopped working since I returned back to Columbia late Sunday night. Apparently, I can’t go away for a weekend without loads and loads of shit building up for me to do either with my Internship or the Maneater. The trip was worth it though so I guess I can’t complain too much.

But I realized tonight when Mike texted me “Are You Alive?” that I hadn’t seen him since practically last Wednesday (7/2) night. Something’s wrong with that, especially since I have been back in town for almost three days, and he lives across the hall. I also came to the realization this weekend that my alcohol tolerance is slipping.

I refuse to be drank (I have no idea if this is the right form of the word drink that I should use here. I tried to figure it out but really the J-School’s Grammar test that I took did nothing for me) under the table this coming Fall by a Crazy Redhead or Schwaller (“I’m moving out!”) or (please God no) Fran. Time to refocus.

I am enjoying the Summer, but there are many factors that really help me have fun and relax and slow down when I’m stressed about getting through all the work that I have to get done. Some of these would include:

  • Buffalo Wings and Beer
  • Wednesday Morning Red Bull Pong
  • Driving down the highway
  • Nature and hiking
  • Beer
  • LOST
  • Walking up our front porch and wondering if at any minute the beaver is going to pop its head out of the hole.
  • Beer
  • Julia’s Blog
  • The fact that I get to leave for California next week for JanSport
  • Happy Hours
  • Knowing that next Fall I only have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Coffee
  • Beer
  • Jimmy’s Steak House

I’ve forgotten about many of these points. My goal for the next few weeks is to refocus and remember these and use them or think about them and slow down when I get caught up in work and disappear from Wilson Ave for a few days. Afterall, it is Summer 2008. Work hard, play hard.
